brianaberger Contest Entry:
My name is Briana Berger and I’m a junior at F.W. Buchholz High School in Gainesville, FL. I’m the founder, CEO, and Chair Executive Director at coderGirls. coderGirls is a national nonprofit working to provide engaging curriculum to educate female middle schoolers and high schoolers in computer science. I founded coderGirls after witnessing the lack of girls in my computer science classes. Since then, I have been working with 85 Girl Scout councils and over 350 schools to implement coderGirls' curriculum and chapters to impact over 500,000 girls. We have chapters in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York, California, and Nebraska.
coderGirls has a large focus on having girls connect computer science to outreach. I believe that having each girl motivate others to code, it allows for the girls to further boost their own want to join computer science. So, each chapter tries to develop coding community outreach. In addition, I started a mentorship program at coderGirls for each chapter to get experienced college students and technical professionals to mentor the students in coding and management. I also started the coderGirls Nationwide Competition, where female high school students compete with a video based on connecting their passion to computer science. coderGirls also created "inspire_her," where high school students, college students, and technical professionals are featured. It is coderGirls' way to help inspire young girls by looking at female coder role models in high school and above. To further support girls, we have an online course option for girls without a chapter in their neighborhood, a coding forum, and daily coding challenges. At the moment, coderGirls, due to my efforts, is partnered with Grok Learning, TechGirlz, CSForAll, Girls In Tech, and more.
My efforts in code have led me to win as a Technovation Global Coding Competition Semifinalist, a NCWIT Aspirations in Computing National Awardee 2017, a Congressional App Challenge Winner, a Stanford She++ #include Fellow, and my film called Fighting the Gender Gap won as the Most Innovative Solution in Girls Impact the World Film Festival.
